From a Functionalist point view moral panics can be perceived as ways of responding to the chaos created by the crisis during the 1970’s. ‘According to Cohen the media representation of situations is crucial in creating moral panic’. In the case of the mods and rockers (two conflicting British subculture), the media portrayed them as ‘folk devils’ making them look as a potential threat to public order and social values. By dramatizing the threat to society in the form of ‘folk devil’, the media raises the collective consciousness (a set of shared beliefs and moral attitudes) and ‘reaffirms social controls when fundamental values are threatened’ (AQA A level sociology)
